It did cross my mind that I should make one of these for this weeks photograph...but then, very sensibly, I remembered what a large pudding it makes, it really does need to be served in sensibly small slices, how many kilojoules it contains and how, now there are just three of us at home, our diets would be very compromised as we heroically ate our way though it...I will leave it for when there are more of us in residence, maybe next January when James and Helen are coming on a visit. It is his recipe, after all.
So, bearing that in mind, I made another type of "parfait"...it seems that almost any sort of dessert compilation can be bestowed with the term, any perfect combination, I suppose is fair enough, even those yummy yoghurt, muesli and fresh fruit breakfast treats.
Be that as it may, this old gelatine based fresh strawberry pudding recipe from my file was the one I decided to make.
I probably haven't made this since we had our own prolific strawberry patch and the children were all very young. It is a perfect childs tea time recipe when strawberries are at their best.
This time I simply cut out the cream and most of the sugar, using low fat milk in order to accommodate Tim's requirements. The strawberries are the first of the local crop to be available, and are quite sweet and well perfumed for such early fruit. We will eat these for supper tonight and simply dream of the "proper parfait" that might have been.
I am still working with the sourdough starter...the cooler weather has certainly slowed things down but for the past two days I have been feeding it each 12 hours, rather than at 24 hour intervals, and now the mixture is looking very lively indeed. I hope to make the first loaf tomorrow, if things continue as exuberantly as they are at present.
Tim and Chris planted out the 6 Daphne odora cuttings that I managed to strike this year...I hope they continue to thrive as well now they are out in the big wide world. They will make a nice addition of greenery along the back fence.
I had a small Canon camera that Nick loved to use at that time, indeed, I still have it now, but rarely use it...he is the only one who was ever able to empty the battery in a single sitting and he made me very glad that it was digital, not film!
I have a lovely collection of photographs, (not always flattering, mind you!), as many taken from below the table of our feet, hands etc. as we chatted on a visit.
He also had a great interest in taking a photograph of his own feet and shoes, into balloons, ice buckets, toy boxes...anything he came across...I love looking through them and remembering the cheerful, independent and inquiring little chap he was at that time...
Better trot, the heat is building up here in my room and I need to find somewhere cooler along with a cup of peppermint tea!
Hope you are having a parfait day! Bye for now,
Di
