Here in Tasmania, candies are more likely to be called lollies or sweets...I have always called them sweets. Back in the day I had a few favourites. Honey bears, aniseed blocks, (4 for a penny), Pascall Fruit Bonbons, caramel cobbers, home made honeycomb and best of all, mums toffee apples, were amongst them. My favorite toffee apple would be made with a freshly picked Cox's Orange Pippin and just a thin coat of toffee...but I would not say no to a Lady In The Snow or even a Crofton, should it be offered...sigh!
As children we were not encouraged to eat such tooth destroying items, they were usually only produced on long car drives or special occasions.
These days I rarely indulge in eating sweets...although I am still fond anything caramel flavoured, and a nice salty Dutch licorice certainly still hits the spot...I have also been known to steal one of Chris' green snakes when he wasn't looking...
In thinking about the inchie for this week, it didn't take me long to decide on another of my firm favourites from childhood, one that has stood the test of time and remains my life long, but rarely made, favourite, Russian toffee.
Once having the thought in my head, it became impossible not to make batch. Since then I have been rather overindulging for the past couple of days, savouring the memories of this delight.
The trouble is it is the most moreish thing to have about...I think it has the same irresistible mental pull as an open block of chocolate has on some folk. I will be glad when it has all been eaten and I no longer have to resist the urge to get up during the night and taste just one more little piece...
The weather has turned cold once more here...thirty three degrees Celsius with bush fires last Thursday, one week later, snow! Not right here where we live, mind you, but the wind lets us know that snow is not that far away...
A friend visited this week, bringing us a gift of the most beautiful roses...the scent and loveliness has cheered my week!
I had better move, the boys have started supper but I need to go and do some finishing touches or they will be chasing me...
Bye now,
Di
